Biking in Walnut Creek can also serve a cause. You can join the Mount Diablo Challenge, which is a race. It is intended to benefit Save Mount Diablo’s efforts to conserve the land on the mountain. The challenge is an 11.2-mile, timed bike ride. It starts at Danville’s Athenian School and climbs up Southgate Road to Mount Diablo’s summit. A thousand cyclers compete for prizes in multiple categories, which are awarded to the winners in a ceremony on the summit. The ceremony includes food and beverages for all. Held in fall, the start gun is fired at 8:30 a.m., with waves departing every five minutes after that. Early registration costs $75, and late registration is $90. Go to the website to register. The organization also hosts other events that include running, horseback riding, hiking and camping on Mount Diablo.
