Day trip from Walnut Creek to Oakland CA
Oakland Day Trips

Walnut Creek is only a short drive away from Oakland, making a day trip to the city an easy and worthwhile trip. Approximately 16 miles away from each other, you can get to the large Bay city from Walnut Creek by taking Highway 24, a drive that only takes about 21 minutes. You can also reach the city by the BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit), which takes 30 minutes.

There are plenty of reasons that you might want to head into Oakland for the day. Whether you are traveling alone, with friends or with your family, Oakland is home to a variety of activities and attractions that are must-sees.

One such attraction that is great for the entire family is the Oakland Museum of California. This museum displays a variety of exhibits that recreate environments in art, history and nature, helping bring visitors in touch with the state and region’s cultural heritage. The museum is located at 1000 Oak Street in Oakland, so stop by and check out the many interactive displays.

Another fun attraction in the city is The Paramount Theatre. Whether you catch a show or take a tour, this building is a prime example of the Art Deco architectural style. Completed in 1931, the theater is now home to the Oakland Symphony and Oakland Ballet, as well as several other shows. The theater also provides tours of the restored building on the first and third Saturday of every month. Tours last two hours and only cost $5. However, the tour is best for families with older children, as kids less than 10 years old are not permitted. The Paramount Theatre is located at 2025 Broadway in Oakland, a street that has many terrific bars, restaurants and cafes, which are great for catching something to eat before or after visiting the theater.

If you’re traveling to Oakland with young children or the young-at-heart, Fairyland is a must-see. Located at 699 Bellevue Avenue, this theme park brings fairy tales to life. With almost 40 different fairy-tale-inspired sets, including Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan and Peter Rabbit’s Garden, the park is magical for children and adults alike. The park also includes rides, such as Anansi’s Magic Web, animals, gardens, cafés and a gift shop for taking a piece of the magic home with you.

The Chabot Space and Science Center is another popular attraction in Oakland. Located at 10000 Skyline Blvd. in Oakland, this center brings space down to Earth. An affiliate of the Smithsonian, the educational center strives to provide students of all ages with interesting and relevant information about our planet and the rest of the Universe. With interactive exhibits, planetarium shows in a digital dome, and the largest research-quality telescopes open to the public on this side of the country, the Chabot Space and Science Center will get children excited about science and learning. The center is also home to the Skyline Bistro and Starry Nights Gift Shop, which offers items that will further your child’s education in science.
